A full album visual (45 minutes long!) with a special focus on a visualiser for single Cro-Magnon Man, put together for @squidbanduk's latest album Cowards.

Interspersed amongst cuts of video and photography from @tonjethilesen, the band, and my own archive are glitchy, whirling animated iconographs which were really fun to make: expanding 2D imagery into 3D objects with a local fork of TRELLIS and then tearing them apart in AE with my favourite plugin cocktail, Pixelstretch b2b RetroDither.

Tony Allen - Secret Agent

Tony Allen, hailed by Brian Eno as “perhaps the greatest drummer who ever lived,” was a pioneer of Afrobeat and a global music icon. Known for his groundbreaking work with Fela Kuti and collaborations with artists such as Damon Albarn, Tony’s rhythmic innovations shaped modern music and continue to inspire musicians worldwide.

WILDERNESS worked with World Circuit Records to create a new animated music video for a remaster of Tony Allen’s classic track “Secret Agent”. We aimed to celebrate his lyrics and capture the energy of Afrobeat through vibrant visuals, bold colours and dynamic motion.

Motion City Soundtrack - Apple Motion / Spotify Canvas

Worked with Epitaph Records to go through the majority of Motion City Soundtrack's old releases and add subtle motion as per spec with Apple Motion's guidelines.

These guidelines can be very specific so working with an experienced designer who's gone through the hoops on these is paramount to getting approval from Apple.

These assets are also key to getting proper playlist placement and distribution.

These assets are all live on Apple Music and Spotify if you want to go see them in their element.

In this project, I handled both video editing and color grading to create an immersive "alien vibe" for Chloe Jane’s music video. Edited in Premiere Pro, I used vibrant, futuristic colors to evoke a surreal, extraterrestrial atmosphere. The video’s rhythm and pacing were carefully crafted to align with the track, creating a seamless blend of visual effects and music that captivates and transports the viewer.

Based on the lyrics of the song, which are about heartbreak and disillusionment in a relationship, I put the meaning into a new context. The visuals show how (many) humans relate to AI: The Artificial Intelligence seems like something divine - sublime, extraterrestrial, out of control -, the religious relationship becomes a toxic love.

[And btw: I did not use AI to create this video. Just my human skills to operate Photoshop, After Effects and Cinema4D.]

Oblivion Waits

Overview

Await the Dawn is a metal band from Albuquerque, New Mexico. They approached me to create a logo for their band, a single cover, the EP cover for their first release, and a visualizer for Spotify. I guided the band through their first effort to brand themselves and led the creative direction for the band’s first artworks.

Await the Dawn released Oblivion Waits on Halloween of 2023.

Approach:

At the time the band approached me they were still very early in the process of creating music as a group. We tapped into the various elements of the members character, interests, and backgrounds to distinguish a starting direction for the band’s aesthetic and word mark.

Logo

Creating something that was distinct and legible, yet still aggressive were some of the main takeaways from my first meetings with the band. I designed their mark to have strong movement, and aggressive shapes without cluttering up the letters too much. Creating a strong symmetrical look helped the mark identify itself clearly with the rock/metal genres but more on the side of rock rather than extreme metal with the clean letters. Finally, roughing up the type gave it an even more aggressive look, and the iron sun at the top helped connect their mark with the sentiment of their name.

Gospel of the Godless (Single)

As their first piece of artwork we used the single cover as a playground to explore ideas. The song was written about the weaponization of religion so it has a lot of dark themes. I wanted to create strong imagery for the cover that would reflect those themes and illuminate them in a cool way. The final artwork depicts a fearful young human being slowly corrupted and overpowered by demonic, withered hands of religious creatures inside of a tortured fever dream-like reality.

Oblivion Waits (EP Cover)

After finding a good rhythm with the single cover, we embarked on the EP cover. The band had a few songs written at the time but not the complete EP. From what the band did have I was able to interpret a lot of themes of mental toil and struggle. Members of the band shared their individual stories and writings for the music to help illuminate the final direction for the art. The Oblivion Waits cover reflects those stories with a tortured character who wears a blinding crown of light battling a maelstrom of demons. This graphic captures the aggressive, tumultuous, and hopeful energy of the group I feel and creates a compelling visual motif for listeners to enjoy.

We were recently commissioned by Hospital Records to create the live visuals for P Money & Whiney’s audio visual tour which debuted at the the final run of shows at Printworks in London.

The approach for the creative direction consisted of 3 key elements built to reflect each asset of the project, with hard hitting typography, fast paced, dynamic background textures and the inclusion of footage to highlight the unique features. These 3 core elements created the foundations of the 13 full length visuals that were created and cut to each track.

The intersection of kinetic typefaces and illustration is a sort of chemical effects help me to represent the sound thoroughly.

Abort. is a Japanese visual metal band from Nagoya. Vocalist Atsushi

and guitarist Jin- started the band in 2017. They released their first

EP in the same year, and since the hiatus of a few years, they

published their first music video in 2022. One of the songs from the

EP is called "贖罪のシナリオ". Using various kinds of typefaces and kinetic motion to depict the protagonist's story of how to fight back against the enemies when people in his solitary life bullied him.

Visualiser created for minimal techno DJ, EartoGround label boss and Fold resident Gareth Wild.  The artist wanted the video to show some connection to the Fold club in Canning Town and the underground sub-culture for which is it known so the video tracks a journey through East London to the club. Shots of local graffiti are composited with digital and VHS distortion to build complex textures responding to the dynamics of the track.

Visualiser for ILO

ILO is an Icelandic musician currently based in Scotland, who has been actively producing and releasing music for more than two decades. Throughout his career, he has put out tracks on esteemed labels such as Thule, Rebirth, Darek, and Borg. ILO's unique style is characterized by contemporary lol-fi house, which blends slow, melodic beats with a dub undertone and new wave elements.

This latest work, "How Does It Feel," showcases ILO's experimentation with a new wave disco sound. To complement this musical direction, we created a bespoke visualiser featuring an ever-evolving display of ink interacting with oil, layered and mirrored on top of each other. The ink and oil movements seem to push and vie for space, resulting in a dance of opposing viscosities. The visual effect of the evolving and layering ink and oil symbolism represents ILO's musical storytelling.

Vera Blue Album Visualisers

We were commissioned to create visualisers for every track off Vera Blue's latest record 'Mercurial'. We took the floral album cover and worked with that theme, illustrating and animating several flowers related to each of the songs on the album. We also included key lyrics for use across Spotify, YouTube, Instagram and TikTok.

Parachute

We were commissioned to design the centre label and visualisers for Virgin Music's new dance imprint Parachute. 

Building on the lightbeam element used in the packshot the visualiser takes inspiration from a top down perspective of a parachute opening up. The motion reflects it moving into the distance as it gets closer to land which then transitions into a rotating set of lines to subtly connect to the spinning motion of a record. The addition of subtle light effects and noise adds depth and sense of nostalgia.
