Greg Lake - I believe in Father Christmas

Matt Hutchings was commissioned by BMG to animate this charming, heartfelt video to celebrate 50 years of Greg Lake's iconic track 'I Believe In Father Christmas'.

The video utilises a mixture of traditional animation, motion capture and a series of old Photoshop paint filters to create a visually striking, illustrative tale of Christmas spirit, told through a generational tale between a father and his son.

Sometimes the strongest thing you can do is walk away. "Ungrateful" chronicles the trajectory of a love that once felt infinite – "I touched the stars and the moon, the sky" – before reality intervened. The lyrics capture the painful recognition that devotion and effort can't always save a relationship, repeating the sobering truth: "The harder we try, the deeper we fall… Love is the most ungratful game of all." Yet from pain comes clarity. Driven by a groove that feels both worldly and intimate, the song transforms heartbreak into self-determination as the narrator releases what no longer serves: "Just not my game anymore… I'm free."

The Budos Band - Overlander

For Budos Band's latest single Overlander I revisited some techniques I developed a little while back, putting a fresh twist on them. The foreground animation's built with a virtual set in Unreal Engine 5.5, comped with a whole load of painting textures developed with sd1.5, while the animated background skies and clouds are all classic After Effects, which also covered the compositing as well as a load of visual effects and messy grading.

Incredible project to work on, thanks to Brian Profilio (@b.profilio.art) for working with me to build on his original artwork for the band's new album VII.

WAR

After the collapse, men sacrificed flesh for simulation binding all future sons to an artificial eternity. Women Chose freedom. From the ashes, they forged digital avatars not to rule, but to reveal the truth. For centuries, the battle raged. A war of sexes, of ideologies... Yet neither could see the truth. The virtual world was a cage. The battle, a test. And the architect? Not man. Not woman. A savage god......watching.....learning....
