The Malthusian Trap - Past Lives (2020)
'Past Lives' is a multi-media animated music video project. Working as the solo filmmaker and editor, I used a mixture of moving image techniques to create a living character living in a seedy cardboard city.
The song's lyrics create clear vice related imagary, which provided key themes for the music video. Taking inspiration for Blur's 'Coffee & TV' music video, I wanted to create a unique character and place it in a strange location. I took further inspiration from children's television from the 1980's and 1990's, which I came across following the direction of the band, who requested the video look grainy, seedy and reflect old television programmes and my own reaction the song's title - 'Past Lives'.
I built the set from old cardboard boxes, and created the characters from my nieces toys. The robot character is based a toy robot I had as a child, and was shot using a green screen. The animated eyes and componets on the robot's body were animated using Adobe After Effects.
