The Malthusian Trap - Things To Come (Lyric Video) (2019)
'Things To Come' is a mixed media, moving image based lyric video. Taking inspiration from the lyrics, archive footage from the past, together with a mix of live performance and vlog footage supplied by the band, the lyric video employs layering and bold colours to add interesting visuals, helping kinetic transitions for verses, choruses and music interludes.
The band gave clear instruction that they wanted to feature in the video, but also wanted imagery to reflect their distopian themes that feature heavily throughout the songs lyrics. The song features a vocal sample at points in the song - "If you work for a living, why do you kill yourself working?" I wanted to visual replicate this, so the film employs archive material from the early 20th century, showing workers digging ditches and working in factories. The band are also facinated by the idea of pathogens and political ideology, this is reflected in the piece with the use of microscopic videography of bacteria sourced from my own archive.
