The Comet Is Coming session

Their name might suggest otherwise, but this exploratory trio have very much landed. And with great force. Comprised of still-young London jazz veteran and saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings, synth wiz Dan Leavers and drummer Max Hallett, The Comet Is Coming are the UK's premier sci-fi jazz and psych-rock outfit. A cosmic-sounding trio who are providing the soundtrack to the party at the end of the world.

All three members of this intergalactic jazz trio wield Wu-Tang like aliases – King Shabaka (Hutchings), Danalogue The Conquerer (Leavers) and Betamax Killer (Hallett) – and apply the same intensity to their own futuristic sound. The trio take in groovy overdriven electronica, melodic Afrobeat and freewheeling astral jazz, which owes a debt to both the Sun Ra Arkestra and Flying Lotus, and all those acts in between. Along with the likes of Jacob Collier, Yussef Kamaal and GoGo Penguin, they're mapping out new directions for British jazz music.

The band's 2016 debut album Channel The Spirits was nominated for that year's Mercury Music Prize in the UK, and their recent, ominously titled EP Death To The Planet is another mind-expanding trip through skronky, groove-driven psychedelia. To usher in the release of an expanded special edition of their Channel The Spirits album, which features their Prophecy EP from 2015 as well as three previously unreleased tracks known as the Ancient Tapes, The Comet Is Coming perform an exclusive live session for Red Bull Music. So climb aboard.
