Gravenhurst 'Nightwatchmans Blues'
Printmaking and Animation: Thomas Hicks
The challenge was to find an interesting way to create packaging for a limited edition double 7" vinyl release. The label, Warp Records was producing 1300 copies of the vinyl and I had the idea that each of the sleeves could be a printed animation frame. Using handmade printing blocks I printed across each of the sleeves responding to the music. I used a numbered checkered board backdrop to help me position the blocks as I animated. I enjoy the fact that the frames of the animation are folded with the vinyl and scattered around the world in peoples record collections.
Biography:
I work as a music video director, illustrator, animator and create projections for theatre companies and live music performances. Over the years I have worked with many independent and major record labels. Highlights include a music video for Paul McCartney & Wings for the song ‘Call Me Back Again’ (MPL communications Inc.), Skunk Anansie for the song ‘I believed in you’ (Boogooyamma Records), Newton Faulkner for the song ‘Write It On Your Skin’ (Sony Music), Joshua Radin for the song ‘I’d Rather Be With You’ (Warner Brothers Records) and a series of music videos for the band Gravenhurst (Warp Records). I have recently completed music videos for the bands Kayak, Pain of Salvation and Pure Reason Revolution through InsideOut Records/Sony Music.
