Happenstance Workshop is owned and solely operated by artist and wood-turner Bob Watson. He uses his practice to investigate the possibilities of wood as a material, designing and handcrafting decorative objects and bespoke furniture pieces.

Bob needed Happenstance’s new website to present the intricacies of his practice as the context for his products, whilst also functioning as a smooth ecommerce experience. Recognising the origin of the products as part of the woodland, the website would take visitors on a journey from raw logs to highly refined decorative objects, and then reflect on the traces of the tree’s original characteristics as seen in the final piece.

We advised Bob on various ways in which digital space could help connect people to his products, like using photogrammetry and intuitive web interactives to enable people to visualise his crafting methods. The final result was a website built to engage its visitors in the complex stories that take place inside Happenstance Workshop, before presenting them with a seamless way in which to purchase Happenstance’s products.

All asset collection, design and implementation was completed in house. The site is built with Next.js, Sanity.io with Shopify and react-three-fiber for 3D interactions.
