50 Years of Mr Men and Little Miss
A zany and irreverent behind the scenes look at a dearly loved and longstanding design brand ‘50 Years of Mr. Men with Matt Lucas’ documentary explored the origins of the characters, the creator Roger Hargreaves and his collaborators alongside super fans, analysts and the brand’s current owners, who discussed how a series of stories based on what a tickle looks like went on to change the face of global publishing and examine why it still holds such a cherished space in the hearts and minds of children today.
Our art direction paid homage to the classic Mr. Men and Little Miss animations by Terry Ward with style notes and character movements developed in collaboration with Sanrio and Tern TV. Our animated sequences were designed to fit perfectly with the brand’s styling guides and the canon of Mr. Men and Little Miss work.
To open the film we created a title sequence animation using typography stylised as classic characters alongside some of the best loved characters; to announce the new characters we animated a party that showcased 5 new character designs alongside the cherished and longstanding characters they will join and to close the film we animated a Zoom conference inspired Vid Talk where host Matt Lucas interviewed some of his best loved characters with hilarious results.
We aimed to create animations that shared the vibrancy and joy that Mr. Men and Little Miss are well known and loved for. We used classic patterns and typography alongside brand new compositions of characters as a way of celebrating their longevity and the fun felt simply by seeing them on screen.
