Statement:

The question is being asked all over the world: Are we entering a new Cold War? Some say we are already in the midst of it. Other’s are more optimistic. Regardless, the global deterioration of peace is impossible to deny. While the idea of a full-scale nuclear war seems impossibly ridiculous, the number of nuclear weapons around the world are both astounding and terrifying. Will mankind destroy itself? Maybe. Maybe not. In the meantime, Watchmaker focuses on the strange and surreal beauty of these weapons, and what the last “minutes to midnight” might look like.

Ploughshares Fund 11/2013

Global nuclear weapons stockpile numbers are at approximately 16,300.

New START Treaty 9/2014

Russia and the United States share approximately 3,285 nuclear warheads, currently armed and ready to launch via ICBM’s (intercontinental ballistic missiles) or SLBM’s (submarine-launched ballistic missiles).

Martin Amis. Einstein’s Monsters

“What is the only provocation that could bring about the use of nuclear weapons? Nuclear weapons. What is the priority target for nuclear weapons? Nuclear weapons. What is the only established defense against nuclear weapons? Nuclear weapons. How do we prevent the use of nuclear weapons? By threatening the use of nuclear weapons. And we can’t get rid of nuclear weapons, because of nuclear weapons. The intransigence, it seems, is a function of the weapons themselves.”
