Remote Portraits
INVISIBLE RESTRAINT – REMOTE PORTRAITS
(Ongoing Project)
Based on concepts surrounding isolation, identity and technology, I collected a series of remote portraits and visual testimonials from people around the world who, like the rest of us, are currently locked away inside their homes. Each person was asked to respond to two questions by sending me a short video, writing one word (or phrase), as well as sending me a selfie that they had stored in their phones. This material was later re-registered in my DIY studio here in Porto.Since the whole planet is confronting the same problematic, what I find interesting is the distinctly different manners in which everyone copes and grieves. ‘Invisible Restraint’ is a project about finding freedom within limits/limitations.The constant panoramic, the unchanging horizon of my restricted daily life is shown in the background of each video. These are juxtaposed with each of the subject’s quarantined reality, which have been shared with me through messaging apps. These short-realties give me new perspectives, wider windows to look out of, ones whose views go far beyond the single landscape that I have been physically provided, until who knows when.
