Established in 2014, the Tumaini (Swahili for “hope”) Festival is an extraordinary example of a large-scale cultural event held annually within a refugee camp.

The festival was created and run by refugees in collaboration with the host community to benefit both the refugees and the host community. Since its inception, over 129,000 people have attended the event, and 409 acts from across the globe have performed.

The Tumaini Festival is a free-of-charge event that provides an incredible opportunity for refugees to engage with the host community and generate income for their improved livelihoods. However, the most crucial outcome of the festival is to instill hope throughout the refugee community.
